Experience, Role & Skills Area

I manage a department at the University of Aberdeen which acts as a PCO working in partnership with our academics and external clients, providing a wide range of support for a range of events including conferences, short courses, virtual events and CPD.  We are a team of 7 and as well as responsibility for the financial viability and quality of our provision, I am responsible for the development and implementation of the University's strategic aims in this area of activity.

Member Profile

I manage a team responsible for developing and delivering commercial events, professional development and conferences from the University to external audiences. The team acts as professional conference organisers providing diverse services including bid support, business and financial planning, project and event management, market research and marketing, securing sponsorship, event delivery, logistical management, registration services, exhibition management, on the day support and evaluation. I directly project manage events and oversee all those co-ordinated by other team members. Projects are varied e.g. short courses, bespoke commissioned provision, research dissemination, conferences (in person, hybrid and virtual) and e-learning to Postgraduate qualifications.

I am responsible for the development and implementation of the department’s strategic aims in line with the wider University strategic objectives and I ensure the financial viability and quality of all activity and ensure that it meets relevant regulations.

Over the past few years I have steadily increased demand for the departments’ services throughout the University and the team now also provide support for external organisations; enhancing the diversity and magnitude of events. I also see the value in partnership working, developing key partnerships with other stakeholders in business events locally, nationally and internationally.

I have also been involved in a range of strategic projects for the University, e.g. reviewing all events provision and support throughout the institution and managing market research to review options to increase tourist footfall and spend on the University campus.

I have a keen interest in my own professional development and am currently undertaking a Digital Marketing Qualification. I represent the University in a range of settings e.g. on the Scottish Universities Group, a sector-wide association and I represent the University on the City Council’s Aberdeen 365 group.

Out with work I am just as busy, with a teenage son keeping me on my toes, and when I can find time I enjoy travelling, cooking and motorcycling

"This is the third of our international Gut Microbiology conferences that CPD Services have supported us in organising. It certainly makes it easier to have them on board – they deal with all the awkward logistics (booking venues for scientific and social activities, online registration, travel and accommodation for speakers) leaving us free to focus on creating a scientifically interesting, interactive meeting. They also run the registration desk and trouble shoot AV issues during the conference, freeing the organisers up to chair sessions and focus on the science and interacting with attendees.
