London chosen as host city for 2019 European Cities Marketing Summer School

Tuesday 21st May. London has been selected as the host city for the 2019 European Cities Marketing (ECM) Summer School, a five-day educational programme designed to give young people an insight into a career in business tourism. This year represents the 33rd ECM Summer School and will be the first time it has been hosted in London since the programme was founded in 1987.

Led by the London Convention Bureau and European Cities Marketing, 50 students from across Europe will have the opportunity to learn from meetings industry experts, attend practical workshops and discuss some of the latest trends impacting the global business tourism sector.

Delegates will also get the chance to experience the very best of London’s world class MICE offering, with the main programme taking place at the Tower Hotel, in the heart of some of London’s most iconic landmarks and centre of the city’s mixture of old and new attractions. The hotel is located next to the Tower of London UNESCO World Heritage site and within easy reach of the iconic HMS Belfast World War Two Battleship and Europe’s largest modern skyscraper, the Shard.

London is one the world’s leading cities for business tourism, welcoming over 3.5 million business travellers in the past year alone. From royal palaces and world-class museums to high tech venues and outdoor spaces, London has a diverse range of over 1,000+ venues, 20,000+ restaurants and 1,600 hotels to suit all budgets and tastes.

The UK capital is also home to some of the world’s best meeting industry experts and participants on this year’s programme will receive talks from the likes of Barbara Jamison, Head of Business Tourism for Europe at the London Convention Bureau and James Rees, President of ICCA and Executive Director at ExCeL London, the UK capital’s largest conference venue.

Other faculty for this year’s ECM Summer School include members and partners of ECM: Lone Alletorp Callard (Wonderful Copenhagen), Nalan Emre (IMEX Group), Christian Funk (tw tagungswirtschaft), Sam Johnston (Dublin Convention Bureau), Cain Leathem (GB Fitness), Sissi Lygnou (AFEA Travel & Congress Services), Heike Mahmoud (Congress Center Hamburg), Christian Mutschlechner (retired from Vienna Convention Bureau), Miguel Neves (Miguelseven),Mathias Sondermann (SAP), Dennis Speet (ICCA) and Daniel Waigl (CIRSE) led by the course leader Pier Paolo Mariotti, CMP CMM (EURAC Research).

The educational programme will provide delegates with exclusive access to senior professional leaders from the industry and knowledge about the skills needed for successful career in the Meetings Industry. Topics covered in the programme include: acquisition of international events, sales and marketing strategies including the use of social media, storytelling through the lens of a journalist and an understanding of the matrix of client decision making.

The ECM Summer School event programme format also encourages maximum engagement time between students and the experienced meetings professionals that compose the ECM Summer School faculty. The course content also guarantees students to meet with as many counterparts as possible whether for challenging speakers in plenary sessions, group work, networking or socialising. Sessions will also topics around health and personal wellbeing.
