Conferences & Events Manager at the Royal Statistical Society since 2015, having held various events roles at the Society since 2002. Responsible for the organisation of the Society’s annual international conference as well as other key Society events. Finalist ABPCO Best In-House Conference Organiser 2018.
I have worked at the Royal Statistical Society since 1999 and have been involved with their annual conference in some capacity or other since 2002. I was appointed to the position of Conferences & Events Manager in 2015 and a key responsibility of this role is to plan and deliver the Society’s Annual International Conference.
The Royal Statistical Society (RSS) is one of the world’s leading organisations to promote the importance of statistics and data, and has done so since its foundation in 1834. The RSS is a professional body for all statisticians and data analysts – wherever they may live - with more than 10,000 members in the UK and across the world. As a charity, the Society advocates the key role of statistics and data in society, and works to ensure that policy formulation and decision making are informed by evidence for the public good.
The annual conference has gone from strength to strength in recent years achieving record numbers of attendees in successive years (2017 and 2018) following a long-term plan to restructure and re-brand an event that had been treading water for a number of years. The success of the 2017 Conference led to a shortlisting for the ABPCO Excellence Awards for Best In-House Conference Organiser. The 2018 Conference built on this success with a further increase in attendance and attracting attendees from a record number of countries (43).
For the annual conference my role includes working with a board of volunteers to develop the programme, liaising with venues and suppliers, developing a marketing strategy, sponsorship development and managing the staff project team to deliver the conference.
My role also includes oversight of the Society's wider event programme including the vast array of activities delivered by Society Fellows through our specialist sections and local groups, and also management of the Society's special lectures and events such as the President's Dinner and Award Ceremonies.
